Client Background:
Our client, a psychologist and mindfulness teacher, sought a sanctuary for work and creativity that reflects her Australian-Chinese heritage and love of Zen design. She envisioned a low-maintenance, eco-friendly home that provides both privacy and tranquility.
Design Layout and Features:
We designed the house with two pavilions in a V-shape surrounding a central Zen courtyard, maximising views of the adjacent public park. The East Wing includes private spaces—an office, master retreat, and guest room—while the West Wing features living areas, an art studio, and an open-plan kitchen. Our design prioritises accessibility and incorporates sustainable building practices, ensuring a seamless blend of aesthetics and functionality.
Quality of Construction:
Constructed by our dedicated team, the home utilises eco-friendly materials like charred timber and double-glazed glass to enhance energy efficiency. Features such as a motorised concrete screen for security and carefully designed gardens contribute to the overall sustainability and beauty of the residence.
Design Challenges:
Addressing our client’s mobility issues was a priority. We designed the layout to minimise height differences and included accessible features, ensuring safety and independence for her.
Innovations:
Our design integrates Zen principles, utilising “borrowed scenery” to create a visual connection with nature. Unique elements, such as a moon garden and bespoke details like a phoenix-themed front door, reflect our client’s heritage and vision. We successfully balance modern design with traditional aesthetics, providing a tranquil retreat that honours her journey.
